Have you been to Whole Foods lately? Did you notice anything new? Well, if not, there is a new way to measure how nutritious your food is..ANDI or Aggregate Nutrient Density Index. It is a system developed by Dr. Joel Fuhrman, that ranks food depending on the amount of nutrients to the amount of calories in the food. The initiative is part of a larger program that Whole Foods has started to help people make more nutritious choices.
The ANDI score analyzes the following nutrients in a product: Calcium, Carotenoids: Beta Carotene, Alpha Carotene, Lutein & Zeaxanthin, Lycopene, Fiber, Folate, Glucosinolates, Iron, Magnesium, Niacin, Selenium, Vitamin B1 (Thiamin) Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin), Vitamin B6, Vitamin B12, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Zinc.

Of course, this scoring system is not the only way to determine if a food is good for you or not and it can be misleading. For example, Kale has a score of 1000 (the highest) and Olive Oil has a score of 9 indicating it is lower on the scale. However, if you only used this scale you would omit a lot of fat and a certain amount of fat is an essential part of the diet.
While we appreciate Whole Foods efforts to get people to make healthier choices we think things should be simpler and not more confusing.
